Annual Scientific Meeting 2008

The Annual Scientific Meeting will be held on 31st Oct 2008 to 2nd Nov 2008 at Shaw Auditorium, Postgraduate Education Center, Prince of Wales Hospital, Shatin, Hong Kong.

 

This year’s Annual Scientific Meeting will be co-organized with MD Anderson Cancer Center. In addition, we will also have Dr Ian Ellis from the University of Nottingham, who was our histopathology short course speaker last year, to further enlighten us on breast pathology.
This Annual Scientific Meeting will take the format of specialty short courses, in which the speakers will discuss problematic cases with the audience. We have a total of 5 speakers, giving a total of 5 specialty short courses over a span of 3 days. Early registrants this year will also have their own set of slides of all the discussed cases.

 
Topics and speakers:
1. Difficult differential diagnoses in breast disease (I Ellis)
  • Diagnosis of breast diseases present crucial issues for both the pathologists and clinicians. Dr. Ellis will highlight common problems and unusual pitfalls through challenging cases.
2. Molecular markers in colorectal carcinoma (S Hamilton)
  • Molecular genetics of colorectal carcinoma has imposed an emergence significance for clinical management. This course will offer pathologists an overview of the molecular pathogenesis of colorectal carcinoma and the role of new molecular techniques in diagnosis will be discussed wherever appropriate.
 
3. Update in oro-pharyngeal and salivary gland neoplasms (M Luna)
  • The histological diagnosis of salivary glands neoplasms can be problematic and challenging. Through a cases-based discussion, Dr. Luna will illustrate the practical aspects of diagnosing of salivary gland tumors with particular emphasis on differential diagnoses, diagnostic problems, and pitfalls
 
4. Thymoma - current concepts (C Moran)
  • Diagnosis & classification of thymoma is difficult and sometimes controversial for pathologists. Dr. Moran will discuss the current concepts with illustrative cases in this short course.
 
5. Interpretation of prostatic biopsy (J Ro)
  • Pathologists are handling increasing numbers of prostate needle biopsies. Dr. Ro will detail the parameters to be gleaned and practical tips of reporting cancer in these limited samples.
 

The Abstract platform/poster Presentation session
 

A Resident Slide Presentation session will be held on 31st October, 2008 (10-15 minutes per case). All residents are strongly encouraged to participate. For case submission, please send 15 H&E recuts together with a short abstract (200 words) to the Meeting Secretariat. Prizes will be awarded for best slide presentation(s). 

The presenting authors for abstract or slide presentation must register for the meeting. Deadline for submission (for both Abstract and Slide Presentation) is 31st August, 2008. Attendants can be accredited up to 14 CME points by the Hong Kong College of Pathologists for the entire program.
